Woman officer fatally shot man in apartment she mistook as her own
Amber Guyger, a former Dallas police officer, fatally shot Botham Jean in his apartment on September 6, 2018, after mistakenly believing it was her own. She was convicted of murder and sentenced to ten years in prison, serving seven years before being granted parole. (Source: Dallas News) If this had been someone else with a handgun, that person might have spent 15 years in prison before parole, like a young man I knew who made a stupid mistake. What a terrible waste of time for a mistake. In Bible times, if two men got in a fight over something and one was killed, the other man could flee to a city of refuge, where he explained an escalating conflict in which he was defending himself and had no premeditation of killing anyone. If judged to be truthful, he was free to live in that city without revenge from relatives of the dead man. This was a provision in the wise laws that God gave to Moses (Deuteronomy 4:8). These laws included eye for eye, tooth for tooth, life for life, and were superior to prison for a few years before parole that often leads to another murder, theft or sex offense, at taxpayers' expense.
